WINForum Executive Summary
The WINForum meets four times each year.
At these sessions nutrition experts present on nutrition and health issues relevant to today’s athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, and health/nutrition educators. Following each session, an Executive Summary is created.
- Sports Diet Dilemmas - Facts About Sports Nutrition, Energy Drinks & Dietary Blunders
On July 31, 2011, 170 coaches from all over Washington State attended the WINForum nutrition clinic at the WIAA Coaches School in Yakima, where they learned how to help their student athletes can put healthy nutrition into practice for peak performance in their sport. Emily Edison, MS, RD and former UW Athletics Dietitian, discussed “Sports Diet Dilemmas” using questions we received from coaches and their athletes, and outlined the WINForum Sports Nutrition Game Plan.

Northwest Junior Volleyball Tournament
The Winter 2011 meeting of the Washington Interscholastic Nutrition Forum (WINForum) was held on January 2nd, 2011, at the Bellevue College Campus. This special WINForum “mini-clinic” was held on behalf of the NW Volleyball Association for their annual Volleyball Jamboree.
- Continuing Education for 3 WIAA Clock Hour Credits "Nutrition Essentials for Peak Performance"
On Saturday, November 20, 2010, the first WINForum Nutrition Clinic eligible for WIAA coaches clock hours was held at the UW Founders Club on the University of Washington campus. During the three-hour long clinic, Sports Nutritionist for UW Athletics, Emily Edison, MS, RD, discussed ways in which balanced meals and a healthy lifestyle can improve an athlete’s performance.
- Off-Season Sports Nutrition: Eat to WIN … even in the Off-Season
The WINForum Webinar Clinic was held on June 9th, 2010, at the Odegaard Library Videoconferencing Center on the University of Washington campus. Emily Edison, M.S., R.D., UW Sports Dietitian and John O’Kane, M.D., UW Head Team Physician discussed with an online audience the importance of athletes having a controlled diet of fruits/vegetables, whole grains, lean meats and low-fat or fat-free dairy – even during the off-season.
-Weighing In On Sports Nutrition
The WINForum Spring Clinic was held on March 5th, 2010, at the Northcreek Events Center on the University of Washington-Bothell campus. Thirty-five coaches and athletic trainers attended the session where John O’Kane, M.D., UW Head Team Physician, and Emily Edison, M.S., R.D., UW Sports Dietitian, spoke on the importance of balancing nutrition with an athlete’s individual needs to reach peak performance.
-WINForum Sports Nutrition Game Plan
The 3rd annual WINForum fall clinic was held on October 28th, 2009 at the University of Washington’s Conibear Shell House. About 40 high school coaches and athletic trainers attended the session where Dr. Brian Krabak, UW Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Emily Edison, M.S., R.D., UW Sports Dietitian, introduced the WINForum Sports Nutrition Game Plan.
-Sports Diet Dilemmas
The WINForum clinic for summer 2009 took place during the WIAA Coaches’ School at the Yakima Convention Center on July 31st. Over 140 coaches attended the sessions where Emily Edison, MS, RD, Western Washington WINForum Coordinator and Sports Dietitian for the University of Washington Athletics Department, presented information and advice on “Sports Diet Dilemmas” so that coaches can help their athletes better understand the connection between healthy eating and peak athletic performance.

About 20 parents, coaches, athletes and soccer enthusiasts attended the workshop, where Emily Edison, M.S., R.D. and Sports Dietitian for the UW Athletics Department, presented information and advice on building a proper diet for young athletes. Her advice was founded upon the five food groups identified in the USDA’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans and stressed the importance of fruits, vegetables, grains and low-fat dairy products – which together provide the fuel our bodies need to perform at their best.

Sara Schofield, R.D. and Coordinator of Sports Nutrition at WSU, offered advice on making healthy, nutrient-rich foods a part of an athlete’s diet. Healthy foods include fruits, vegetables, grains, and low-fat dairy to provide proper nutrition for the body to perform at its best.

UW Medicine’s, Brian Krabak, M.B.A., M.D., and UW Athletics’ Emily Edison, M.S., R.D., describe the benefits of eating healthy through their S.C.O.R.E. system of rating your plate. Athletes should have a balance of nutrient-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy in their diet.

Alysun Deckert, M.S., R.D., C.D. of UW Medical Center uses the USDA Food Pyramid as a guide, incorporating nutrient-rich foods to create a healthy eating plan made to help any athlete reach peak performance.
-Power Eating for Recovery
UW Athletics’ Emily Edison, M.S., R.D., and author and sports nutritionist, Susan Kleiner, Ph.D., R.D., FACN, CNS, emphasize that in order to reach peak performance athletes must practice healthy eating habits.
-Eat to Impact Performance
UW Athletics’ Emily Edison, M.S., R.D., and Trent Greener, M.S., CSCS, talk about the importance of good nutrition for peak performance on and off the field using the USDA Food Pyramid as a guide to encourage healthy meal planning as a part of athletic training.

Dr. Susan Kleiner, author and sports nutritionist, says that what we eat dictates how effectively we are able to perform. Combinations of carbohydrate andprotein, found in chocolate milk, are ideal to help sustain energy levels through workouts and encourage recovery afterward.

Dr. Jackie Berning, author and sports nutritionist, presents a definitive way for athletes, coaches, and parents to plan healthy meals that include food from all groups in the USDA Food Pyramid
