What is the WINForum?
The WASHINGTON INTERSCHOLASTIC NUTRITION FORUM or WINForum, is an ad hoc organization dedicated to promoting better nutrition education for young athletes engaged in sports. The goal of the WINForum is to reinforce the connection between good nutrition and peak athletic performance. The WINForum website offers resources for high school and college coaches, student athletes, and parents to help plan healthy meals and nutritional diets for increased performance during exercise and training.

What is the Food Pyramid?
The
Food Pyramidd is a USDA guide to balanced eating. It consists of five food groups: grain-based food, vegetables, fruits, dairy foods, meats and other protein. These five food groups provide all of the nutrients young bodies need.

Why is drinking water important?
It helps eliminate food waste products in your body, regulates body temperature during activity, helps digest, is involved in converting food into energy and helps lubricate joints. Water even helps increase energy. If you are in high school, drinking water between classes will help you to feel good and stave off hunger.

I want to lose weight, are the latest fad diets ok to try?
Often fad diets promise too much too quickly, and restrict your diet to certain food groups or a small amount of food intake. Restricting food intake in order to lose weight can lead to inadequate intake of essential nutrients. These nutrients are needed not only to support a high school teen’s ongoing growth and development, but also for optimal athletic performance. Think about your body as a high performance machine, and remember that healthy foods provide energy. Teen machines need high quality fuel to perform at maximum levels. Choose a healthy meal plan that follows the food pyramid and you will have a successful diet.

What should I do if I want to lose weight?
If you really think you need to lose weight, talk with your parents and trainer and get connected with a registered dietitian. Any weight-loss plan must be carefully designed. And remember, weight management is all about calories in vs. calories out. As an athlete engaging in physical activity, you’re already affecting one side of the equation, while not jeopardizing the quality of your diet.

Why do I weigh more than my friend when we eat the same type of foods?
Everyone has a distinct body type, which can only be modified so much by “dieting.” Keep in mind that genetics plays a big role and appreciate your individuality.
